TIDAL FESTIVAL
23 – 29 January 2017

The tides are flowing towards Devonport this January as the city’s youngest arts and culture celebration, Tidal Festival, takes over popular locations from the Mersey Bluff to Devonport CBD.

Whether it be an art, sport, environmental or recreational activity we are sure you will find something that inspires you. We have the entire community covered - from the very young to the elderly; the artistic to the athletic; the sun lovers to the nature walkers so we hope you are enlightened and entertained with our tidal offerings.

ANNALISE REES

Tidal Festival’s artist-in-residence, Annalise Rees, navigates her way to the ‘tidal zone’ of Mersey Bluff Beach, creating and installing original art works for all to enjoy across the entire Festival week!

Take a walk along the footpaths and discover the works nestled in the natural vegetation and structures, and seek out the artist as she builds and installs small works throughout the Festival period.

Annalise’s works have been inspired by several trips around Tasmania’s coast on a professional cray boat, including a month spent off Flinders Island in the state’s North East.

Originally from the rugged south coast of Kangaroo Island in South Australia, Annalise Rees completed a Bachelor of Visual Art with Honours, majoring in sculpture from the Adelaide Central School of Art through their scholarship program in 2004. Annalise has exhibited across Australia and has been an artist in residence in Tokyo, New Delhi, Sydney, Hill End and Darwin. She has worked with the International Cartographic Association, Montreal and most recently was an official voyage artist on board the Marine National Facility’s RV Investigator on a two-month voyage to Heard and McDonald Islands in the sub-Antarctic.

FIRST PORT OF CALL

Photographs from the Robinson Collection

Photographer Bert Robinson established his photographic studio in Devonport in 1927, and in 1928 was commissioned by the Mersey Marine Board to photograph the Port of Devonport. The Robinson Photographic Studio would continue to do so for several decades, capturing a burgeoning period during the 20th century when imports and exports from Devonport surpassed Tasmania’s other ports combined. View this enterprising aspect of Devonport's past at the Bass Strait Maritime Centre.

WHY HAIKU

Cameron Hindrum

Haiku poetry asks us to comment on the natural world and our place in it. Relying on revered principles of economy and simplicity, a good Haiku is deceptive: an observation made within it often masks a deep and compelling truth.

This workshop provides one possible framework for the conception and crafting of Haiku. Participants will explore a variety of starting points, develop and share their own work, and then explore further using the principles of Haiku in other poetic or fiction writing.

MORRIS FLAG JOURNAL

Annalise Rees, Tidal Festival artist-in-residence

Projected onto the Devonport Surf Life Saving Club, Morris Flag Journal is an artwork which has evolved from Annalise’s travel around the Tasmanian coast aboard a professional cray boat. Utilising journal drawings and the moving image, which were made as a response to an unknown and unfamiliar environment, the combination of these two mediums juxtapose different temporal experiences.

Why not make a night of it, and enjoy dinner and live music at Drift Café Restaurant from 5.30 pm.
